Jordi Barre
Music and interview

He studied in the Perpignan conservatoire and from a young age performed in symphony orchestras. Later on, he was to form his own orchestra, bringing him widespread recognition. Following the release of his record Canta Perpinyà, made up of poems by Jordi-Pere Cerdà (1963) set to music, Jordi Barre always wrote and performed in Catalan.  Jordi Barre is seen to be behind the introduction of the Nova Cançó musical movement in northern Catalunya, where he performed throughout his career.

His extensive repertoire includes works both by Catalan poets along with his own, which includes musical comedy, traditional songs, songs for children and also symphonic works. The most notable of his records include El xiprer verd (1979), Si te’n vas (1984), Amb la força de l’amor (1990), Angelets de la terra (1993), Els reis de Mallorca (1993), Jordi Barre a l'Espai (1995), Tots els records (1998) and Infants de l'Univers (2000). In 1982 his music went gold when he was awarded with the Disc d'Or. Other noteworthy prizes include the Joan Blanca prize for the defence of Catalan (1999), la Creu de Sant Jordi (1992) and l'Orde Nacional du Mèrite awarded by France.
